It’s that time of year again! Folks everywhere
are making New Year’s Resolutions that they are convinced will help them become
better people in many ways in 2019. And most of those resolutions can (provided
you can stick to them of course) With all of this in mind we’ve put together
this list of New Year’s Resolutions you can make as a driver that will not only
help you become a better one but help you take better care of your vehicle and
save money too!

Resolve to Save Money on Gas

Although gas prices have been fluctuating
rather wildly throughout 2018 whatever the price at the pump the last thing
that any of us want to do is spend more than we have to on gas. While you might
not be able to cut down on the amount drive
you can cut the amount of fuel you use in several different ways:

Warm Up Your Car for Shorter
Lengths of Time

If you wake up to a cold morning, don’t warm
up the car for longer than 30 seconds (up to one minute if you must). If you
idle the engine for more than a minute, you waste fuel and pump nasty
greenhouse gas emissions into the air. Engines of modern cars do not require
the extensive length of time that older models needed to warm up.

Slow Down and Drive Steady

Driving fast may be fun, but it also increases
drag, which increases fuel consumption. Driving just below the speed limit and
driving smoothly (not accelerating quickly) uses gas more efficiently, so you
may have to fill up a lot less often.

Monitor Your Tires

Under-inflation causes tires to wear out
faster and wastes gas. Properly inflated tires reduce friction and offer better
gas mileage.

Tune the Engine

Car engines need to be regularly tuned. A
properly tuned engine uses less gas, so if you can’t remember when you last had
a tune-up, it may be time to schedule one.

Resolve to Cut the Road Rage

Yes, some people out there on the road seem to
have been put there just to annoy you. And yes, there are some really bad
drivers out there (no, we don’t know how they passed their drivers test
either) But getting angry behind the
wheel is only going to distract you from being the good driver you know you
are. Don’t let someone else’s mistakes affect your driving. Keep your cool, and
be on your way!

Resolve to Treat Your Vehicle to
Regular Maintenance

Keeping on top of your car is key to it
lasting. And that means when it comes to little things as well as big ones. If
your oil needs changing, have it changed, don’t wait and see ‘how far your can
push it’. If your car is shaking slightly when you drive, but ‘not a lot’ don’t
ignore the message it’s trying to send.

Chances are that a simple alignment is all you
need but it could be a sign of something worse (and driving a poorly aligned
vehicle kills your tires anyway) We could offer a lot more examples but the
bottom line is this; if something, anything, seems to be wrong with your
vehicle take it to your mechanic right away.)

Resolve to Broaden Your (Driving)
Horizons

Speaking of car maintenance after your spring or summer checkup – why not plan something amazing for a roadtrip this year once you know your vehicle is in tip top shape? Hop in your car and go somewhere you’ve always dreamed of. You’ll build up your confidence out on the road, and have an amazing time whilst doing so. Win win!

The very last thing anyone wants on a cold winter morning is to have trouble starting their vehicle. However, as far too many of us have found out the hard way that often that is exactly what does happen. So trying to prevent it is good for you as well as good for your car.

In order for you to know and recognize what can be done to help prevent cold weather starting issues, it helps to understand a little more about why they happen. The most common include all of the following:

You Battery Hates the Cold

Batteries and cold just don’t mix. This actually applies to even the most sophisticated batteries – have you ever noticed how much faster your phone loses its charge when it’s allowed to get very cold? – and that is certainly true for the battery in your vehicle. A cold battery produces less current, and so makes it harder for your vehicle to get going.

Engine Oil Does Not Like the Cold Either

Cold weather tends to thicken engine oil, meaning it does not flow as well as it usually does and moving all of the engine parts gets harder. This is bad news for your already weakened by the cold battery as it is going to have to work harder to get everything going.

The Cold Can Mess With Your Gas/

If there’s any water in your vehicle’s fuel lines (there shouldn’t be, but it happens more often than you might think), cold temperatures can cause that water to freeze, blocking the flow of fuel. This is most common in the fuel lines, which are thin and easily blocked by ice. A car with frozen fuel lines may turn over just fine, but it won’t run on its own.

Preventing Cold Weather Starting Problems

Now that you know what causes cold weather starting problems it’s time to take a look at some of the things you can do to prevent them.

Try to Keep Your Car Warmer

This may seem like a no-brainer, but it is not always easy. It’s always best to keep your vehicle in a garage during the winter months and a heated one if possible. But even an unheated garage is better than leaving your car out in the cold.

However, not everyone has access to a garage. If that is the case for you at least make sure that you park your vehicle near something big, like a tree or next to a building. This really does help – it’s all connected to the physics of heating and cooling – and a car parked in this way overnight will usually manage to stay several degrees warmer than one left completely out in the open.

Switch Up Your Oil

If you check your vehicle’s owner’s manual it should have a recommendation for what kind of engine oil you should be using in cold weather. Chances are it will tell you your car needs to rely on a multi-weight oil. These are designated by two numbers (10W-40 for example)

The first number, with the W, is for winter; the lower number means it flows more easily. 5W- and even 0W- oils exist, but check your manual to make sure that your vehicle would be able to handle it.

Prevent Fuel Issues

Auto parts stores and gas stations sell dry gas for gasoline cars and fuel conditioner for diesel, each to help combat fuel-line freezing and, in the case of diesel cars, gelling. Consider using a bottle every now and then. However, it should be noted that your fuel may come with such additives straight from the pump, so check with your gas station what’s in their fuel before putting anything else in your fuel tank.

That means that making sure it is in tip-top condition is a must.

If your vehicle’s battery is old, or has a habit of failing (even when it’s not freezing cold out) the chances are that it needs to be retired and replaced. However, when a newer battery fails sometimes it’s simply good old-fashioned dust and dirt that is to blame. If your battery terminals are dirty, the battery itself will struggle to function as it supposed to but the battery itself may still be good.

You can clean these battery terminals yourself, as long as you know how. Here’s what you need to do to make sure your battery terminals are spotless:

Turn off the Engine – That may sound like a bit of a no-brainer but many people do actually forget, and while this is a very straightforward process, for the most part, there is always a slight risk of injury. Turning off the engine will minimize that risk.

Do Some Basic Disassembly – Turning to the battery, loosen the nut that is holding your negative cable in place using a wrench. Detach the cable from the post and then ‘rinse and repeat’ the process on the other side.

Do a Visual Inspection – Take a few minutes to visually inspect your vehicle’s battery. What you are specifically looking for is any fissures or cracks. If you do notice any, even if they seem relatively small, this almost always indicates that there is a problem with the battery that goes beyond simple dirt and you need to take the vehicle – and the battery – to a mechanic to have it properly inspected. The same is true if the clamps or cables look worn or frayed.

Mix Your ‘Magic Potion’ – If you don’t see any of the trouble signs we just mentioned then you can go ahead and mix the simple – but very effective – ‘magic potion’ you’ll need to perform your cleaning task. And it really is simple (and cheap) as all you need is a tablespoon of baking soda dissolved in a cup of warm water.

Get Cleaning – Dip an old toothbrush into the mixture and use it to scrub away any signs of corrosion you see on your battery terminals. Don’t be afraid to really scour thoroughly to get things squeaky clean. You may have to soak your toothbrush in the baking soda mixture a couple of times as you keep scrubbing away.

When everything looks good, use a spray bottle filled with cool, clean water to rinse any residue of the mixture off (that’s very important) and then use an old rag or towel to pat the clamps and battery dry. That done, use a little bit of petroleum jelly to lubricate the terminals and then reattach the cables to their correct terminals.

Whether you’ve just completed your project vehicle, or finally purchased that AMG you’ve had your heart set on, you’ve got to have wheels that set your car or truck apart from the rest. And let’s face it- some wheels are more expensive than the vehicles wearing them. That’s why it is important that you care for your wheels in a manner that keeps them looking great for years to come!

Brake dust is the number one cause of dull, unattractive wheels. No matter the composition of your brake pads, or your driving habits, brake dust is inevitable. Other factors include road debris, tar, and the wandering dog or cat (seriously).

Below are a couple of tips for maintaining the luster of your new wheels.

● Wheels are made available in several different finishes. Make sure that your wheel cleaner is intended for your particular finish whether your wheels are chrome, painted, hypersilver, polished, or a machined surface. You will also need towels, scrub brushes, a bucket of warm soapy water, carnauba wax or similar, a hose and spray nozzle.

● Before cleaning your wheels, be sure to allow time for your wheels to cool to the touch. You can aid in the cooldown process by hosing the wheels off with cool water from a garden hose. It is best to park your ride in the shade before getting started.

● Just like the body of your vehicle, most wheels are painted and clear coated. Never use harsh cleaners or soaps to clean your wheels. Lightly dirty wheels can easily be cleaned with a good quality car wash soap and water, but if there is an extra build up of brake dust and road grime a very soft bristle brush will help take it off after washing with soap and water.

● Regular weekly cleaning of your wheels will help prevent brake dust ever building up and giving you tough cleaning issues. After cleaning, applying a light coat of wax will protect your wheels and help stop brake dust or ride grime sticking to your wheels. If cleaning chrome rims, do not apply wax, as the chrome needs to breathe. Instead, use a cleaner intended for chrome surfaces.

● Removing the wheel and cleaning the backside can increase the amount of light reflected through the spokes, thus making the front shine more brilliantly. To remove years of buildup, you may have to use a brush to scrub until the surface is clean of all dust.

● When detailing your wheels, you may come across chips and scratches caused by kicked up debris or perhaps your neighbor got careless with this lawn care techniques, blasting your beautiful wheels with sand and rocks. You may have misjudged a turn or entered an area downtown where you should have brushed up on your parallel parking skills. Whatever happened, your wheels look pitted, scratched and dented. This is known as curb rash.

This is not something, unfortunately, that any amount of wax, or polish with “buff out”. Curb rash calls for expert evaluation. Sometimes a wheel can be refinished, other times it may be best that it is replaced, but that’s not a call you should really make alone, ask the staff at a reliable local auto shop instead.

Summer is winding down, Fall is on the way and as the seasons change they bring a new set of challenges and considerations for drivers and their vehicles. While the winter – and the challenging weather and driving conditions – it brings may still be a while away now is the perfect time to get your car or truck ready for the cooler weather challenges that lie ahead.

Here then are some practical tips to help get your car ready for fall.

Check the Brakes and Tires

Bad weather – especially snow and ice – call for great stopping power. This means it’s crucial that your tires and brakes are up to the task. Schedule them a checkup at your local auto shop and if you are told your tires or brakes need work (or replacing) …get it done now. Stalling for the sake of saving a few bucks can be a disastrous decision, maybe even a fatal one.

Check ALL the Lights

Most people do check their headlights at the end of the summer because they do realize how important it is, both for themselves and other drivers on the road, that their headlights function well when snow, ice, and fog set in and reduce visibility.

The fact is though you should check ALL of your vehicle’s lights. That means checking the taillights, parking lights, brake lights and even the emergency flashers. You all need to take the time to clean them all (chances are that there are more than a few bug carcasses on those backlights) and if you own an older vehicle with sealed-beam headlamps, you might want to invest in halogen lamps for improved visibility and safer driving.

Check and Replace Wiper Blades

The purpose of wiper blades is to completely clear the windshield. Cracked or worn blades just cannot do that, and in Fall or Winter that can be a very dangerous thing. Check each blade’s rubber to ensure it is flexible and operate the wipers to see that the blades clear the glass. If they don’t, replace them now.

Make Sure Heater/defroster Works

Driving in the Fall – and especially the winter – without a properly working heater isn’t fun and it really isn’t safe either because driving with fogged-up windows is an accident waiting to happen. Check both the front and rear window defrosters to ensure they are in proper working condition. If necessary, have heater and defroster systems repaired now, rather than waiting until the temperatures really start to drop.

Check Your Battery

Winters are challenging for even the best car battery so if yours is not quite up to the task anymore the time to replace it is NOW. And as it’s always better to be safe than sorry have it installed by a trained technician so that everything is done just right. While you are out hit the auto parts store too, to pick up a self-contained battery charger. They are now very inexpensive and there really is nothing worse than waiting by the side of the road on a cold night with a cold, dead battery hoping that someone with jumper cables will happen along.

Get a Full Oil Change

Even if you are not quite at the recommended oil change time get one done now anyway. Oil can freeze when the temperatures drop, but the cleaner it is, the less likely it is to do so. And while that’s being done get the levels of all your essential fluids checked (which most good auto shops do anyway)

Do you faithfully remember to take your vehicle to your local auto repair shop for a check-up at least once every six months? Do you ensure that it heads there at the first sign of trouble, to prevent further damage and ensure things remain ship-shape for as long as possible?

The chances are you do, as most of us understand how much we rely on our vehicles. But do you give your car’s interior as much care as you do its exterior?

If you’re like most of us with busy schedules, it is extremely hard to find the time to run a vacuum over the interior, let alone actually do some car detailing properly. It does then tend to become a dumping ground for all sorts of things and occasionally even a sort of treasure-trove for junk collectors.

But it does not have to be that hard to give the interior of your car a good clean, and once you have done it once maintaining this new, neat state of affairs should not be so hard. Here are some basic pointers to get you started.

Getting Started

Park your car in a cool, shaded spot as some cleaners can get ‘baked’ to a car’s upholstery in direct sunlight, which will dry out the natural oils in any leather. Head out with a good stock of cotton, terry cloth towels for applying and removing detail products.

The first task – cleaning out all that crud, can be the hardest. Have a big garbage bag on hand and you may even want to don a pair of rubber gloves in case you come across something really nasty. On the upside, the chances are that you will find at least $5 in change if you do a good clearing out job.

With all of the bigger mess out of the way, step back and really take a good look at the state of your car’s interior now. Are you going to have to tackle just a bit of dust and a few stains or are there nastier food/pet/kid related stains and odors to be dealt with? Assess the damage and then get ready to start cleaning.

Attach a soft brush attachment to your vacuum and, using a gentle ‘stroking’ motion go over the dash, headliner, gauges, and console. After vacuuming, wipe the whole area down with a damp cloth, using a circular motion to remove additional surface dirt before you get down to some deeper cleaning.

Tackling the Tougher Stuff

The chances are also good that the cupholders in your car actually see more mileage than the tires and get just as grimy. If you tend to sip on a soda when driving, you probably have at least some gloopy residue to try and cut through. To do so mix up a batch of baking soda and water in a 1:4 ratio. Spray the cupholder liberally (but don’t soak it) and then allow the mixture to soak in before wiping with a terry cloth towel. After the goop is gone, wipe the cupholder with a damp terry towel and then dry off.

Next, direct your attention to the front seats, the package tray and rear seats, using the same technique as before to take the bulk of the dust and dirt off. To reach the nooks and crannies in and around the seats, console and transmission tunnel, attach the crevice tool and have at it.

Hopefully, your floor mats take the brunt of the punishment and the carpet beneath them is in pretty good shape. Vacuum the mats well with the carpet-comb attachment and then remove them from the car.

Now for the carpet itself. Using the carpet-comb tool, vacuum as much dirt and stuff as you can. If there are stains on the carpet and floor mats are that are relatively small or light, a “spray, scrub and vacuum” product such as 3M Scotchgard Carpet Cleaner will more than likely do the trick nicely. If not, you may have to invest in renting a carpet cleaner instead.

Now it is time to turn your attention to cleaning the dash and seating surfaces. If your vehicle has leather upholstery, opt for a quality leather cleaner such as Lexol-ph Leather Cleaner or Mothers Leather Cleaner. Use separate cleaners and conditioners, rather than an all-in-one product, as this allows for better deep cleaning and the best possible protection for the leather.

Leather cleaners generally come in two forms: spray and liquid paste. The spray types are usually a spray-on, wipe-off affair. Liquids have to be “massaged” into the leather to be effective. In either case, follow the manufacturer’s directions for proper application. After cleaning, you’ll need to condition the leather and dash in order to restore the natural oils and retain its original suppleness and deter aging.

Cloth seats have become more and more resistant to staining, thanks in part to new formulations in fabric treatment, which were originally developed by the 3M company in the 1980s. The use of “Scotchgarding” (the correct term for 3M’s Scotchgard product) adds a barrier to help repel water and oil-based contaminants from staining cloth and velour fabrics. Therefore, cleaning a stain-resistant cloth interior is relatively easy, compared to cleaning a leather interior. Nearly all cleaning products for cloth interiors are produced as an “all-in-one” cleaner and protectant, in spray, scrub and wipe/vacuum forms, such as 3M Scotchgard Cleaner and Protector.

Finally, it is time to pay a little attention to the windows. There are lots of window cleaning products out there, but good old-fashioned Windex is still a great choice but if you have tinted windows stick to distilled water only as the ammonia in Windex can create little ‘pits’ in the film.

If you have had occasion to shop for tires recently then you are more than aware of the fact that they could not exactly be termed as cheap, no matter what kind of vehicle you drive. Therefore, getting more out of the set you have should be something of a priority, unless money is no object, something that is hardly the case for most of us.

So how do you do that? Here are a few basic pointers:

Keep Your Tires Properly Inflated

Try to get into the habit of at least glancing at your tires once a day, either when you park up for the day or better still when you stop for gas (where there will be air nearby if you need it.) A lot of the time you can tell yourself when your tires could use a bit of air.

If you have a newer vehicle it may be equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), which is handy, but you still need to make sure that you know what the optimal tire pressure is for the vehicle when that warning light goes off.

If you do not have a TPMS you should check all of your tires once a month using a good digital or pencil type pressure gauge. Not only will you be helping to extend the life of your tires by maintaining a consistent tire pressure, but you can also improve your average gas mileage by up to 3.3%!

Get Your Tires Balanced and Rotated Every Other Oil Change

By getting your tires balanced and rotated at your local auto shop every 7,000 – 10,000 miles (approximately every other oil change) you will help increase the lifespan of all four of them as the tires on the front of the vehicle wear faster than those on the back. You will also be helping to reduce vibrations that can damage other ‘working parts’ on your car.

Routinely Check Your Tire Treads

A tire wearing on its outside edge is often a sign that your wheels are no longer properly aligned. Misalignment (camber and toe-in) will usually significantly reduce the life of your tires, so routinely inspect for uneven tread wear.

An easy way to check your tread depth is to insert a penny in the tread groove or look at the wear bars (a raised molding inside the groove). If you can see all of Abe’s head or the bars are even with the top of the tread, the tires should be replaced, and you should also have your alignment checked when you do put on the new ones.

Avoid Potholes – Or at Least Go Over Them Slowly

Potholes are certainly a big enemy to tire health. Depending on your tire’s design and pothole’s depth, even hitting a pothole at 20 m.p.h. can cause significant damage to the tire sidewall, which is not something that can be fixed.

If a pothole is unavoidable, it is better to slow down and drive through it than try to swerve away from it at the last second, as doing the latter is nothing short of a driving hazard, both for yourself and other cars on the road around you.

Hail storms are something that most of us in the Olathe, KS area are more than familiar with. They often come and go during the spring and summer months, are often rather unexpected and can cause all kinds of damage. And often some of the worst hail damage affects vehicles that were ‘unlucky’ enough to get caught in the deluge.

What is Hail Anyway?

We all know what hail looks like, and, if you’ve ever been out in a hail storm, you know what it feels like too. But what is exactly?

Hail is ice. Sort of. Rather than being a byproduct of moisture and cold air, in the way that snow and winter ice are, hail is the by-product of severe thunderstorms. As a thunderstorm moves across the sky currents of air move upwards (called updrafts) and downwards (called downdrafts). Inside the updrafts, water vapor (which is a gas) and rain (which is liquid) are pushed high into the storm cloud. At a certain height, the air temperature drops below freezing, producing a tiny ice particle which serves as the center of a hailstone.

When the storm clouds finally break they release these little ice pellets, which, while sitting up in their cloud have often grown in size considerably. They fall fast, and they fall violently. Like little – or not so little in some cases – ice bullets being fired from the sky. They can fall with such force that they shatter winters, can cause injury, and, in the case of a motor vehicle, cause deep denting in the blink of an eye.

Dealing with a Hail Damaged Vehicle

Not so long ago, if a car or truck sustained hail damage that was anything more than a few tiny dents, it was more than possible that an insurance company would consider it an almost immediate write-off. And if your policy did not cover hail damage (which, if you live in Kansas you should always make sure it does by the way) then you were likely left with a car that looked like it had been driven through a shooting range and that had very little left in value.

That was because not so long ago, hail damage repair was very difficult and very expensive. Fortunately, however, things have changed. Something called paintless dent repair has come along and what it can do in terms of hail damage repair can often be near miraculous.

Hail Damage and Paintless Dent Repair

Paintless dent repair is not, in itself, a hugely complicated process or one that takes a great deal of time. It’s simply an innovative way, devised by some major auto manufacturers in the 1980s, of removing small dings and dents effectively and – and this is the genius part – the vehicle’s paint warranty is not affected.

The key to effective hail damage repair using paintless dent repair is, however, the technician performing it. It’s a process that calls for a high degree of skill and attention to detail, as well as an extensive working knowledge of the process itself. All things that the technicians at Newman’s Auto possess in abundance.

This year we hope you manage to keep your vehicles safe during the almost inevitable hailstorms that will rumble our way. The same goes for your property, your possessions and yourselves. However, if your car or truck does fall victim to those vicious balls of ice don’t despair – give us a call about our paintless dent repair solutions for hail damage. We work with all insurance companies and we can guarantee the quality of our work every time. Even when dealing with Mother Nature’s own little ice bullets and the havoc they can wreak.

Many of us love the idea of taking a road trip in the summer, just hitting the open road and enjoying the ride. The one thing that can truly ruin such a trip though – and very quickly at that – is for your vehicle’s air conditioning system to fail.

Being stuck in a car that has no AC on an eighty-degree day is as close to hell as you can get, or at least that is what it feels like at the time and it can be even worse if you are stuck in traffic on the way to work!

‘Sudden’ air conditioner failure is something a lot of motorists complain they have just experienced when they drop their car of at the mechanic in frustration. Sometimes that may be the case – cars can be funny things, even brand new ones – but often a car’s air conditioning system will give you signs it’s on its way out, you just have to know what these are so that they can be dealt with before you find yourself stuck on the highway someplace melting into the driver’s seat!

Tiny Leaks

It’s not unusual for a car’s AC system, however new and sophisticated it is, to develop tiny leaks that can easily go unnoticed for months. It’s therefore important that you get into the habit of checking for them yourself, before those tiny little leaks become a big problem. At the same time you should also check the refrigerant levels to make sure they don’t need a top up before you hit the road on a warm day, even if you are only headed out for a short trip.

Water in the Car

When a car’s air conditioning system is functioning properly it will drain the moisture it has extracted from the hot air in the car outside the vehicle once it has been parked – you should be able to see the little pool under the car for yourself if you crawl down and have a look underneath.

If the AC’s drain is clogged though, that water will begin slowly pooling into the car instead. If you happen to begin to notice strange damp patches in your vehicle check this drain out – before the problem becomes so bad you need to consult with a mechanic to get a whole new system and your car also develops a nasty case of mold!

Strange Noises

When you turn the AC in your car on all you should hear is the low, comforting whir of the fan. Rattling, vibrating or banging noises are usually a good sign that something is obstructing the blower fan which will impact the AC unit’s performance – and probably break it altogether in the end if the problem is ignored.

Nasty Smells

You turn the AC on for a bit of cool but along with it comes a rather unpleasant smell of faint mildew. And that is quite possibly what it is as if the fan is not operating correctly inside the system itself is where mold spores and mildew will start to form, long before their are visible damp patches in the car. To avoid this problem schedule an AC cleaning as a part of the maintenance the next time you take your car in for a check up.

No one likes to spend more money than they really have to on insurance but if you are going to own and operate a car purchasing at least the amount of car insurance required by law is something you simply have no choice about. That does not have to mean though that you cannot look for what could be considered budget car insurance, you just have to go about shopping for it in the right way so that in your bid to save money you do not end up costing yourself even more in the long run. Here are a few tips for buying car insurance the right way:

The Expenses You Cannot Avoid If You Finance

Aside from the minimum coverage required by the law if you chose to finance the car you drive – which is really the only way to get a brand new car these days for most people – the company that is providing you with the financing will have a set of rules of their own about just how much insurance you need to carry on the vehicle until it is paid off.

Although the rules vary most will require some comprehensive coverage that protects the vehicle itself – after all it is still their asset. Before you buy a car what the insurance requirements will be is something you should investigate as they may change the monthly amount the car is really going to cost quite significantly.

Make the Most of Your Good Driving Record

If you have a good driving record it is important that you make the most of that fact in order to maximize your insurance savings. When comparing policies look for the ones that offer discounts for good drivers not only when you first take out the policy but on an ongoing basis as well (benefits like a no accident bonus)

In addition, insurance companies will usually reward drivers who take the time to complete driving safety courses. Although they might simply be relearning what you already know most of these courses are short and inexpensive and the certificate received for completing them can add up to some great savings, so they really are worth a day or so of your time.

Make the Most of Your Car’s Features

When you are completing requests for car insurance quotes you are likely to be asked all kinds of questions about your vehicle’s features. It is important that if you have them you list every safety feature your car has as each one of them may score you a discount. Things like airbags and anti-lock brakes are obvious things to add but many insurance companies will also offer discounts to drivers whose vehicles have less obvious safety features like daytime running headlights or keyless entry locking systems.

Skip What You Do Not Need

Do you really need rental car coverage, or would you be able to take the bus to work for a few days if your car was being fixed and save yourself that little bit extra on your monthly premiums by passing on that kind of coverage? Are the ‘special offers clubs?’ really offering anything that special? Reading the policy carefully before you buy it and then only taking exactly what you need can be the best money saver of all!

One word of caution here though. Don’t be tempted to skimp on essential coverages just to save money. Taking out state minimum might seem like a good idea because you want to save on monthly premiums, but it is a decision usually heavily regretted by those who then end up in accident and find themselves faced with footing auto repair bills all by themselves.
